A Body in Motion

38 Now as they went on their way, he entered a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him.[a]
Does Martha own the house?
Is she widowed?
Where is Lazarus?
Is this the first time Martha has met Jesus or are they friends?
Are the disciples with Jesus?

39 She had a sister named Mary, who sat at Jesus’s[b] feet and listened to what he was saying.
Does Mary live with Martha?
Where was she when Jesus arrived?
Did they know Jesus was coming for a visit?
Why doesn’t she invite Martha to join her? Or, offer to help her?

40 But Martha was distracted by her many tasks, so she came to him and asked, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her, then, to help me.”
Why didn’t Martha ask Mary for help?
What is Martha doing that is so important?
“Do you not care?” How often do we ask that of our Lord?

41 But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things,
Is Jesus “mansplaining?”

42 but few things are needed—indeed only one.[c] Mary has chosen the better part,
which will not be taken away from her.”
But, sometimes the work has to get done.

What would you do if Jesus paid you a visit? Work or sit?
